The leaves are turning a wonderful shade of gold and red, weirdly, the air seems to be getting a little warmer. As always, the British weather is confused. But we’re not confused, not one bit. Because this week 4 of our team headed up to the City of London to complete a two-day course on ‘Understanding the Business of Retail Investment Fund Management Companies’. Now, why would a Digital Agency send their team onto a course which has absolutely nothing to do with web development? Because it has EVERYTHING to do with one of our clients.

As a Digital Agency, we get to work with a huge array of business; everything from a website that sells ‘church chairs’ to ‘Applied Technologies’. But we think it’s important to know the company inside and out so we can better understand the client’s needs. So, on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, the members of our team that look after Woodford, a fund management company, travelled up to The City of London to learn more about fund management with the key objectives of:

  • Understanding the regulatory environment within which retail investment funds, their managers and service providers operate
  • Be aware of different retail fund structures and their operational implications
  • Comprehend key international and domestic trends and the impact of ‘wrappers’, taxation and accounting policies on retail funds
  • Understand the mechanics of marketing, distributing, managing, and administrating retail investment funds
  • Be aware of the connectivity of the business and influences on profitability.

Those objectives might sound like a load of gobbledygook, but it’s important information that help Woodford Funds be the successful company it is today.

The two-day course was run by Cadogan Financial Limited, who have over 40 years’ experience in this field. It was supported by The Investment Association who are the trade body that represents UK investment managers. They have over 200 members who collectively manage over £5.7 trillion on behalf of clients in the UK and around the world. So, this course meant business. The Jerram team were joined by one of Woodford’s Data Analysts (not just to keep them out of trouble!) and were in amongst people who work within the banking and investing firms; Jerram was the only Digital Agency there.

I found the 2-day course a good overview of the workings of a Fund Management company which I have managed to link back to my conversations with the Woodford team over the last 3 years. It’s given me a good insight into KIIDs, Nav prices, the performance analysis of a funds and the importance of accurate marketing.Keiron Roberts, Project Lead Developer.

Learning about how our client’s companies work is a big deal for us. We find it helps us understand the brand better, how the company works, what their needs are as a client, the language they use and what they want. Having even a basic understanding for how a company works is a simple but effective way to show the client that you’re taking them and their company seriously.

As if sending some members of our team on a ‘school trip’ wasn’t exciting enough, those of us who stayed at base have had a pretty great week too!

We’re really excited to be working on a TOP SECRET project for a top-secret client in a top secret location. Ok, the location isn’t top secret, everyone knows we’re at Grow at GreenPark! But, we’ve been working on an ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) project for a client to get an app to talk to a web server to talk to a gadget. It’s all very hush hush and David’s been hiding behind plant pots and under desks to have the conversations with the client. We’re really excited about this project as it’s something we haven’t done before, so stay tuned for more updates!

Talking of IoT’s and Grow at GreenPark; Keiron’s taken ‘Working from Home’ to a whole new level. Resident Hub Mum, Louize was having some trouble getting a Kitronick to work! It was down to the residents at Grow to give it a go at fixing it. There was a lot of “hmm” noises and “that’s still not worked” being thrown about during lunch. At the end of the day, it still wasn’t working. So Keiron, (not challenged enough by 69 mile runs) decided he would take it home and give it a go. After much Googling, tests and coding, all it boiled down to was the batteries! Apparently, the servos needed more power than the board could give (clue one!) and the LEDs only worked when connected with the USB cable, but not unplugged (clue two!). So just on the brink of giving up, Keiron changed the batteries and lo and behold, it started working. It just goes to show, that sometimes it’s the simplest of answers that fixes the biggest of problems. Give the man a medal!

Which finally brings us to FriYAY. Today is the Macmillan Coffee morning – the biggest coffee morning in the country! Jaime from BrightHorse (one of the wonderful companies working in our co-working space) organised a fantastic morning full of games (Bingo and Guess the Height of the Cake) and everyone got involved. There were almost as many cakes as there were people and the Jerram Team got thoroughly involved (and not just with the eating). David’s better half Karen created not one, but TWO delicious cakes (Lemon drizzle and Devonshire Apple – both to die for), Tom brought in a yummy dairy free chocolate pumpkin loaf (also, DELICIOUS!), Baber supplied us with some cute little pug cupcakes (pugcakes?) and Marie brought in a very sickly white chocolate cheesecake. By 12pm we were all in a sugar coma and not even coffee could save us but we’re no quitters and always get a job finished. We’ll be going back for more.
